South Florida sleuth Helen Hawthorne gets a history lesson from her landlady Margery Flax. In the 1970s, while pushing papers in a dead-end job, Margery witnessed a battle of the blondes between vivacious Vicki and meticulous Minnie for a promotion that would take one of them to the top of the corporate ladder. But when their office politics turned dirty, the blondes got dangerous—leaving one of them dead and one of them a killer whose identity Margery has kept secret for more than forty years…

Praise for the Dead-End Job Mysteries by Elaine Viets
Winner of the Anthony Award and the Agatha Award

“A stubborn and intelligent heroine, a wonderful South Florida setting, and a cast of more or less lethal bimbos.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris

“Clever.…The real draw, though, is Viets’s snappy critique of South Florida.”—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review

“Wickedly funny.”The Miami Herald

Elaine Viets has actually worked many of those dead-end jobs in her mystery novels, just like her character Helen Hawthorne. She is also the author of the Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper series and numerous short stories. Elaine has won an Anthony Award and an Agatha Award. She lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with her husband, reporter Don Crinklaw.

Killer Blonde A DeadEnd Job Mystery edition by Elaine Viets Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Elaine Viets writes two mystery series. The Joise Marcus: Mystery Shopper series set in St. Louis and the Dead End Jobs series set in Ft. Lauderdale. Helen Hawthorne is the star of the Dead End Jobs series, taking low paying work as part of her PI work. Helen lives in the Coranado, an old town Ft. Lauderdale apartment complex. Margery Flax is her landlord. Killer Blonde is a flashback story Margery tells Helen one night.

In the 1970's, Margery worked in a office. The office was and is presented accurately, exactly what office work was for unmarried women in the 1970's. Think "9 to 5" , not "Mad Men".

The guys are jerks. People drink on their lunch hour. Any woman advancing is thought of as slept her way to that position. The bosses steal good ideas.

Vicki and Minni are in a cat fight. Vicki steals ideas. She undermines her workers. Someone kills her. Margery tells the tale of the days leading up to Vicki never coming back to work.

Enjoy the tale that Margery has kept under wraps for 40 years. I did.

Elaine Viets is a great story teller. This is no exception.

One of my favorite series. It came out at the same time as the new full length book, Catnapped which is better but this is also good
Elaine does it again.... pulled me in and hooked me. Great story, character development and ending w/ a twist. Terrific short story ! Very entertaining.
Great for a lunch time read or whenever you want something short. Well written. Keeps your attention. A page turner. Hope there are many more to follow.
Loved reading about Margery life.maybe some day Elaine will write more about her. Love The Dead End Jobs series.waiting on the next book in this series.
Marjorie Flax tells Helen a story about a perfect murder committed long ago. Especially entertaining if you remember office politics (and fashions) from 1970. Fun to hear the story told in Marjorie's voice.
Elaine Viets writes brain candy for any of us who have been or still are in "dead end jobs." Her series is a blast to read, and we can never stand the wait for a new book. These are great for the beach or when you need a pick up from work.
This novella would be an excellent starting point for anyone looking for a new addictive mystery series. Marjorie is an integral part of the Dead End Job series, and the indirect characterisation by Viets is phenomenal.

The tone is clever, sassy, and surprisingly sinister. I highly recommend this to any mystery fan and anyone looking for a day at the beach or stormy evening home alone read.
